What you need

  • A server with Docker installed
  • A way to get alerts, such as email or Telegram
  1. Start Uptime Kuma

This runs it in Docker and keeps its data in a named volume. Then open http://SERVER_IP:3001 and create the admin account.

    sudo docker run -d --restart=always \
      -p 3001:3001 \
      -v uptime-kuma:/app/data \
      --name uptime-kuma \
      louislam/uptime-kuma:1
  2. Add what you want to watch

Click Add New Monitor. Use an HTTP monitor for websites, a TCP Port monitor for services such as a database, and Ping for servers and network equipment.

  3. Set up notifications

In Settings, add a notification channel such as email or Telegram, send the test message, and attach it to each monitor. A monitor that alerts nobody is only a history log.

  4. Prove the alert works

Stop a test service, or add a monitor for an address that does not exist, and check the alert arrives. Then restore it and confirm you also get the recovery message.

  5. Monitor from outside as well

A monitor on the same server cannot warn you if that server fails, or if the office internet goes down. For important services, also run a check from a second location.
