Prepare before they arrive
Have the desk, computer, email, logins and paperwork ready. A new person left waiting for access on day one gets the wrong message about how you work.
Make day one simple and welcoming
Introduce the team, explain the company's purpose and how their job contributes, and go through safety and basic rules. Avoid overwhelming them with information on the first day.
Assign a buddy for the first week
Choose someone other than their manager to answer everyday questions. Give the new person a small, real task in the first week, because doing real work builds confidence faster than reading documents.
Set clear goals for 30 days
Write down what good looks like by day 30, using specific skills and tasks rather than general hopes. Use this as a checklist for the first month.
By day 7: Knows the team, tools and basic rules By day 15: Completes routine tasks with some help By day 30: Completes routine tasks independently Check-ins: Short meetings on day 1, 7, 15 and 30Review and ask for feedback
On day 30, review progress against the goals and ask what was confusing or missing. New people notice problems that everyone else has stopped seeing, so use their answers to improve the process.
